All aspects of the production of these vehicles, from design to construction to track testing, are conducted in-house at the Owen Ashley Auto Development design studio and workshop, which is situated at the Killarney Motor Racing Circuit in Cape Town, South Africa, whilst the company’s registered office is situated in Nevada, U.S.A.
Owen Ashley Auto Development also consults for various motor vehicle manufacturers including Ford, General Motors, BMW, Toyota and Opel, as well as for specialized projects such as the research and development of an electric motorcar. Background
In 1988, Owen Ashley Auto Development (OAAD) was formed to design and construct specialized one-off and low volume vehicles, as well as to consult for external companies. OAAD was approached by VW SA to design and build VW single seater cars (during the 80’s and 90’s) for the Formula GTI Open Wheeler Series. From 1988 to present, OAAD has been designing and constructing specialized vehicles for Ford Motor Company, BMW (SA), General Motors (SA), and Audi. The company was contracted to design and build the first cars for the Wesbank V8 Race Series, including the custom BMW 535i, built in 1991 at the request of BMW, to race in the Wesbank V8 Series, which won the overall SA championship in 1992. In 1996, Owen Ashley started the Super Car series, a series designed to enable racers from all walks of life to compete on an equal footing using standard regulatory engines. The cars, inspired by the classic Opel Boss, could be purchased in 1988, race ready, at the modest price of $10,000 at today’s exchange rate. This format of racing was later seen in the Deutsche Touring series in Germany. In 1998, Owen Ashley became the Managing Director of Cape Advanced Vehicles, a company based in Cape Town that recreated the classic CAV GT40. These vehicles were heavily sought after in the U.S., and over 100 road-certified CAV GT40’s were exported to the U.S. over a number of years under Owen Ashley’s management. The focus for 2007 has been on the development of the Masters V8 Series and the Ashley APV347is. The APV347is is the all South African designed and built racing saloon car for the Masters V8 Series.
